Windows 10 Upgrade or Not?

Windows 10 upgrade Should I upgrade or not?

I’m getting asked this question so many times now from new and old customers

I don’t think there’s a correct answer to the question to be honest

I’m running Windows 10 on my main computer and I don’t have any problems with it at all

But I’m still running windows 8.1 on my server

Why you might ask?

Well my view is you don’t fix what isn’t brokenwindows-10

The Windows 10 upgrade is offered for free

But that doesn’t mean you need it

If you do the upgrade lots of settings need to be changed when doing so from updates being shared with the internet not just your local network to basic privacy issues

I can

I’m getting lots of calls from some that have upgraded by mistake as it’s so easy to do so and then it costs them money to either get it running ok for them or put them back to where they were before the upgrade

Then it isn’t free anymore

My advice to those who want to be on the latest operating system and do so before the free upgrade offer expires is to make sure your computer is running well before doing so…

No crashes, no popups, random shut downs as the upgrade won’t fix them and probably make things worse

Please contact me for advice before making the decision to do the Windows 10 upgrade and I’ll offer my honest opinion on what you should do

Windows 10’s Latest Update

Microsoft has announced that from today computers running Windows 10 will start to receive the largest update to the OS since Microsoft launched it in the summer.

The update has the codename of Threshold 2, but will show as version 10586 (although MS calls it 1511) when it arrives on your computer. Type “winver” at the command prompt and you’ll be able to see which version you have. See above image

Microsoft says that if you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 in the last 31 days you won’t be offered the update to 10586 from 10240 just yet. The reason, it says, is so that you have the option to roll back to your previous operating system. Although this might frustrate some, there is a workaround that might get the latest version on your computer quicker

To do so, head over to the Windows 10 download page and hit the “upgrade” button. This will download Microsoft’s migration tool. While this might feel odd, this tool is prepped with the latest version of Windows 10, and will do an in-place upgrade of the OS for you.

I’ve updated my PC’s – the process runs very much like a new install, so the usual disclaimer about making sure you have a good backup is relevant here.

This might seem a bit heavy-handed but the update does all of the same stuff when it arrives naturally, so it’s just a matter of hurrying the process along slightly.

The reason, apparently, for this is that Threshold is such a massive upgrade to the core of Windows 10 that it isn’t like a patch, or even a service pack. This is essentially a whole new version of Windows 10. This is, obviously somewhat backed up by Microsoft’s claim that Windows 10 would be the “last” version of Windows. Because of this, we won’t really see service packs any more, but just a new version of the OS. This makes some things a lot easier though, like installing Windows down the line without having to patch or slipstream the latest updates into your build.

Telstra Air

I’ve just signed up to the new Telstra Air and will be updating this blog on my findings

It sounds like a great way to have internet on the go

I have a 4G wifi that I use at this time but I’m hoping to be able to stop this service if Telstra Air is a success

Telstra Air is available at phone boxes throughout Australia

Here’s a few snippets from Telstra’s website

About Telstra Air

As we work to give you easier access to Wi-Fi, our Telstra Air Network™ is growing. As a Telstra Air member, you can use your Telstra home broadband allowance at thousands of hotspots across Australia. But we’re not stopping there. Thanks to our partnership with Fon you can access your Telstra home broadband allowance at over 15 million Fon Spots overseas.

More from your data

Telstra Air will share a portion of your home Wi-Fi connection to create a hotspot that others can use. When you’re out, you can access Telstra Air hotspots using your home broadband allowance to give you more connection options. You’ll get a lot when you share a little.

Connect to Telstra Air

Once you’ve become a member of Telstra Air, you can get online using your Telstra home broadband allowance when you’re out and about, using your Wi-Fi enabled laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Don’t forget to download the Telstra Air App so that you’ll be able to automatically connect to your nearest Telstra Air hotspot in Australia or Fon Spot when you’re travelling overseas.

Overseas you can still use your own Internet

Fon is a global Wi-Fi network, and we’re their exclusive Australian partner. Like Telstra Air, Fon members share a bit of their home Wi-Fi, and in turn, get access at millions of Fon Spots in countries like the UK, Japan, Germany, South Africa and France.

Before you take off to your next destination, download the Telstra Air App to your iOS or Android device to connect automatically to Fon Spots

New Router

My new router arrived today which was very quick delivery from Telstra

I installed the router fine but it took a bit longer than I expected to get the internet back online

I was on the phone with Telstra and I was going to change to back to my old router when It came good

Setup my wifi added my own wifi keys and ready for action

I searched for hotspots while waiting for my son at school but none to be found which was a shame

I guess it’s going to take time

I’ll add more info of my findings soon…

Anti-Virus Which is Best?

Choosing the right anti-virus software is not an easy decision to make…

When your computer seems sluggish, do you blame your antivirus? That was famously the case in the past, but these days installing antivirus protection can effectively speed up your computer. That’s because the best antivirus products do their job more efficiently than the antivirus built into Windows. Which one is best for you?

Paid vs Free Anti-Virus

Free Anti-Virus

Over 90% of my customers use Avast Anti-Virus free alongside Malwarebytes free

Both are great and I feel as long as you use a little common sense while surfing the internet they will do a great job for you…antivirus-program

Other free anti-virus are AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials

Paid Anti-Virus

For me the best anti-virus is very close between

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015

Few products score better in independent lab tests than Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015, and it totally aced our own antiphishing test. On top of that, it offers significant tools to enhance your privacy and system performance. This feature-rich tool remains an antivirus Editors’ Choice

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2015)

Made a clean sweep, earning top marks from all of the independent antivirus test labs. It’s a new Editors’ Choice for antivirus protection

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 8

Is a favourite Anti-Virus software of mine which I’m using on all my home computers

Windows 10 – Security and Update Settings

Here’s what I’ve found so far…

Windows 10, by default, has permission to report a huge amount of data back to Microsoft. By clicking through “Express Settings” during installation, you allow Windows 10 to gather up your contacts, calendar details, text and touch input, location data, and a whole lot more. The OS then sends it all back to Microsoft so that it can be used for personalisation and targeted ads.

This isn’t entirely unusual: recent versions of Windows, unless you explicitly say otherwise, have reported some kind of data back to Microsoft. Windows 10 definitely goes one step (well, a few steps) further though, primarily thanks to Cortana (which ideally needs to be personalised/optimised based on your voice inputs, calendar, contacts, etc.) and other “cloudy” features that somewhat necessitate the collection and squirting of personal data back to Microsoft.

That isn’t to say you should be happy about this state of affairs, however. If you’d like to retain most of your privacy and keep your personal data on your PC, Windows 10 can be configured in that way. Just be warned that there are quite a few toggles that need to be turned off, and you’ll lose some functionality as well (Cortana won’t work, for example).

Read before you install or upgrade…

By far the easiest way to disable Windows 10’s various data logging, personalisation, and telemetry functions is to turn them off during the upgrade/installation process. (If you’ve already installed Windows 10, skip ahead to the next section.)

On the installation screen where it wants you to press “Use Express settings,” instead click the small “Customise settings” button. The first customisation page has settings for personalisation, targeted advertising, and location tracking. If you’re trying to maximise your privacy, go ahead and disable everything on this first page.

The second page has a somewhat useful option at the top, but the others—predictive Web browsing, connecting to open Wi-Fi hot spots, and Wi-Fi Sense—can be turned off.

Additionally, during the setup of Windows 10, another way of sharing less data with Microsoft is to create a local user account rather than log in with a Microsoft account. When prompted for your Microsoft account credentials, instead click “Create a new account” and then “Sign in without a Microsoft account” on the following page. It goes without saying, but this will prevent any of your settings/data from automatically propagating to any other Windows devices that you own.

Now go ahead and complete the installation; the next steps need to be done from within Windows 10…

Head to the new Settings app and click the Privacy button. You can toggle all of these settings to “Off,” though you may choose to keep SmartScreen Filter enabled. Most of these may already be disabled if you turned everything off during installation.

At the bottom of the Privacy applet, click Feedback. From here, you can set the Feedback frequency to “never,” which may prevent Windows 10 from reporting some data back to Microsoft. Note, however, that “Feedback options” cannot currently be disabled; it can only be set to “basic.” More on this later.

Enlarge / How to disable Cortana in Windows 10
Now it’s time to disable Cortana. Hit the Start button. Type a few letters and the Start screen will be replaced by a grey search window. Click the cog icon to reveal Cortana’s settings pane (pictured right) and then triumphantly slay her by flipping the toggle to “Off.” If you’d rather keep Cortana turned on but with some of her other abilities curtailed, they can be configured here as well.

That should be about it: you are now reporting very little data back to Microsoft.

The big question, of course, is whether the potential gain in privacy is outweighed by the loss in functionality. Disabling personalisation definitely makes sense from a privacy perspective, but it could significantly dent voice recognition accuracy and the usefulness of certain OS features like Cortana. On the other hand, there aren’t many good reasons for keeping your advertising tracker ID turned on.

Feedback options…

The most troublesome issue seems to be the “Feedback options” drop-down, which cannot be fully disabled. You can set it to “Basic Health and Performance,” which is probably anonymised enough that you don’t need to worry, but turning it off completely is difficult. On Enterprise and Server versions of Windows 10, open up the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) and navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection. Enable the policy, then set the value to “0 – Off.” You will note that Windows 10 Home and Professional users cannot turn telemetry off entirely; they can only set it to “Basic.”

Updates sharing…

Another feature that you might want to disable is Windows 10’s BitTorrent-like update sharing: by default, your Windows 10 PC will upload Windows update files to other PCs on the Internet, peer-to-peer style. Open the Settings app and navigate to Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered. From here, you can disable this feature fully, or restrict it to just other PCs on the LAN.

Watch out for more updates…

Windows 10 – One Week Later

Since installing Windows 10 I’ve had no real problems to note.

Everything just works like it did in Windows 8.1

I’m still using Start8 so I have a start menu like in Windows 7 but I can use the new menu which windows 10 has and its so much better than in Windows 8/8.1

Today I did my first Windows 10 upgrade for a customer who had purchased a reconditioned dektop with Windows 8 on it and was told simply go online and it’ll update to Windows 10

If only it was that simple lol

I installed the new Windows 10 from a USB stick it went great it took about an hour including all the updates and mesages saying nearly done, almost, soon.

What ever happened to the % bar

I then installed some free software to help protect the customer and so far just about all the software I like to use is working great on Windows 10

I’m sure I’ll be getting calls for assistance as and when more upgrade and I’m sure older PC’s might have more issues with drivers

But I’m starting to think Microsoft might have got this one right

But keep checking back as this can easily change

Windows 10 – The Early Days

Windows 10 – The Early Days

The new operating system from Microsoft has finally been released and it’s being offered as a free upgrade for the first 12 months from either Windows 7 or windows 8.1

Also you can do a fresh installation so install from scratch and this will be probably the best way to go to have a clean start.

I’m doing an upgrade and a fresh install so I’ll be updating this blog to let you know my findings

Like all operating system releases there will be little bugs and a service pack or like with windows 8 a full fixed version winodws 8.1 will most likely appear in time

Would I advise to upgrade now

NO!

I’d wait until a few weeks months have passed and keep on checking here as I’ll be reporting back on my findings
